Los Hooligans
Traditions (Moon Ska Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Traditions is the debut album from Los Hooligans, a traditional ska band from California. Mixing jazzy beats with their traditional ska, these guys churn out some very upbeat ska in the traditional sense. And on their first disc they serve up twelve tracks for you to swing and dance along with.

The title track kicks the CD off. The filling horns will swim around your mind and your feet will become dancing compulsives. You won't be able to resist. You'll jump up from whatever your doing and head straight for the dance floor. With a huge grin on your face you'll ask that beautiful female standing across the room from you if she would like to dance. Pretty soon you'll be having the time of your life. All thanks to Los Hooligans. OK, so this probably isn't going to happen just by listening to this track, but this instrumental will give you a warm feeling inside like something like this could happen. And who knows, maybe this song will be playing when you see the female of your dreams standing across the room? As the song winds down, "Lady in Red," quickly comes on to keep those feet moving. Vocals now enter into the picture, and what a direction they lead the song into. They quickly blend with the band and take the music to a higher level. "Swing Right Rudie" throws some swing into the picture. The harmonious vocals melt your soul like butter, while the band cuts through everything to enter your brain and take over. The horns will be the driving point, as they add emotions as well as paint pictures of a beautiful club with everyone dancing in your mind. Swing in your room, or if your at a party grab someone and just swing the night away. The band will keep putting out more music that will flow straight to your heart, if you'll keep on dancing and enjoying yourself. "Till There Was You" flares things up a bit with their classy touch of Latin music. Now is the time to grab your loved one and hold them tight while you slow dance, or just sit back and think of how beautiful life is, no matter what the situation might be, because after all your alive and listening to this beautifully composed song. Things are looking up now, and your just relaxing your hard worked body relaxing to this beautiful composition. "Wrong Side of the Tracks" finished off the disc with some up tempo traditional ska licks that are sure to just make your toes tap and feet move.

For a debut album, Los Hooligans have hit the jackpot. These guys (and one gal) have a tremendous future ahead of them! And Moon Ska Records is behind them, nurturing them all the way. With Moon Ska behind them, we can be certain these guys will get the guidance they need, and the future they deserve. I'll give this disc an A-. Watch out for these guys, they'll be tearing up clubs near you in the future.
