Oren Bloedow
The Luckiest Boy in the World (Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard St, NY, NY)

By: [email protected]

Having worked and toured with the likes of Dog's Eye View, the Lounge Lizards and Jewel, and having also founded Elysian Fields, diversity is something not so unfamiliar to Oren Bloedow. On The Luckiest Boy in the World, his new solo album, he's joined by Medeski, Martin and Wood as his backing band, adding another element to the diversity. Surprisingly, while the resulting disc does have a slight element of jazz, it doesn't really go in that direction that much, but is actually a stunning collection of mournful pop highlighted by Oren's distinctive vocals with occasional dashes of funk ("Foot Of the Wall") and the aforementioned jazz. A refreshing addition to anyone's collection.
