VARIOUS ARTISTS: Touring Japan (Time Bomb Recordings) By: Sean Gilchrist
Just this past March, Bluetip, Sweetbelly Freakdown, Kerosene 454, and the Japanese band Naht all toured Japan together. Each band mentioned recorded two songs each especially for this cd. The results? You'll be wishing there was more than just 2 songs from each of these impressive bands. Naht is quite a nice surprise having never heard them before. Their sound is a bit DC influenced but sounds quite original. They give us two of their own songs "Scattered" and "Real Estate". Sweetbelly Freakdown is next and their two songs, "Pinbot" and "Chimichonger" are in the same vein as much of the material as their recent full length but a little more focused. Bluetip's two songs are the highlight of this cd. "Japan" is one of their strongest songs yet, starting off all quiet, somber guitars and then breaking into precision drumming and some nice guitar work. "52 Girls" is a B-52's cover but Bluetip makes it their own. Quite a catchy song. Kerosene 454 is up next and offers us 2 cover songs. The first one being Government Issue's "Man In A Trap" which almost sounds like it could be a K454 original but sounds a bit more "old school". The last song is a Jesus and Mary Chain song called "Upside Down" with it's strummed acoustic, noisy feedback, and reverb soaked vocals. Get this cd. Available from Dischord Direct.
