Mindrot Soul (Relapse Records) By: Jeb Branin
YES!! I am always pleased to see a new release by MINDROT. They kill on contact each and every time. "Soul" is a continuation of MINDROT's quest to become the most melancholy and depressing band on the planet. When listening to this CD I find that my remorse is as thick as the guitars, my sadness is as bitter as the vocals, and hopelessness beats on me as incessantly as the rhythms. Musically MINDROT do a magnificent job of striking a balance between melodic and metallic. They intertwine hauntingly beautiful passages and skull cracking heavy ones into a musical tapestry so splendid I am entranced. Don't be fooled by those who would try and dismiss MINDROT as gothic-come-lately wannabes... They are everything but. Their journey into despair is as genuine and disturbing as THE SWANS and they were doing it before most black metal merchants of melancholy even realized there was a band wagon to jump on.
