James Richard Oliver
Blown Mad Baby! (Illbilly Records -- PO Box 924, Blue Ridge, GA 30513-0924)

By: Gary Pig Gold

Should you feel your ears finally deserve better than yet another nibble at some mondo-label's latest flavor of the month, may I hereby suggest a heapin' helpin' of greasy, exhaust-coated rock'n'rumble, J.R.Oliver-style. In the long, grand tradition of Johnny Carroll, Sleepy LaBeef and the fabulous Flat Duo Jets, Blown Mad absolutely revels in its ultra-lo, bottom-of-the-well fidelity: a most welcome breath of musty air indeed in this Digitally Remastered era. Songs fade out wackily at the least opportune moments, and "Out With Carolina", for one, socks with a riff-hearty authority candy-asses like those Stray Cats couldn't even hint at. And, while we're on the subject, Mr.Oliver's "40 ft. Elvis" should be Required Listening in every classroom and juke joint across this great land come January 8th. All in all, this is one of the few recordings around which deserves to be filed under the hallowed "BBQ 'n' Beer" section of your local disc emporium.
