A Boy Called Spite Advance Tape (Gruntshop Records) By: Jeb Branin
This is melodic yet scruffy punk. A BOY CALLED SPITE have a real youthful vibe and plenty of energy which sees them over the hurdle of originality where they come up a bit short. This full length advance has 18 tunes and each one illustrates a variant on the pop punk theme, which is definitely to the band's credit. They are as listenable on the last track as the first They have enough flexibility and versatility to keep it fresh and interesting in spite (no pun intended) of not blazing any new ground. I especially enjoy the vocalist's work. His vocal chords sound like they were just scraped by a less than skilled surgeon. Good stuff.
