Talas If We Only Knew Then What We Know Now (Metalblade Records) By: Jeb Branin
What a blast from the past this is! TALAS was one of those early eighties bands that helped bring legitimacy to the underground metal scene primarily because of the superior musicianship of bassist Billy Sheehan who played for the likes of David Lee Roth, MR. BIG, Glenn Tipton, Cozy Powell and a host of others. This is a live album from a 'for the fans' reunion gig in Buffalo, New York late last year. Frankly a better title for this album might be 'If We Only Sounded Then like We Sound Now'. With the 90's quality production, the massively improved delivery from the band, and the emotional quality of the performance this is by far the best thing that TALAS has ever released. Significantly better than the original album from which most of these songs are taken and heads and shoulders above the 1983 live album that marked the end of the original TALAS onslaught. In fact, I remember being completely disappointed with both TALAS albums back in 1982-83 but this disc is quite good and the band's energy compensates for the mediocre song writing that was always the albatross for Sheehan and company.
