Bolt Thrower Mercenary (Metal Blade Records) By: Jeb Branin
The masters of war metal are back on the front line and they've got their sights set on you. The crunch of the guitars is only matched by the crunch of your bones as BOLT THROWER plow you under like a runaway tank.. The drums are machine guns aimed at your head. Jo's bass is like the throb of your heart as it struggles for its last few beats. And the vocals? Karl Willetts is back in the band and his growl is the voice of Hades welcoming you to the underworld. BOLT THROWER are icons of death metal / grindcore and although they haven't released a new album for awhile "Mercenary" picks up right where "...For Victory" left off. They continue to develop their melodic finesse while not sacrificing their overall heaviness. Never one of the fastest bands in the genre, BT continue to scale down their pace for the sake of better hooks and more melodic punch. For log time fans of the band this album is the next logical step along the warpath, nothing you hear here should surprise you and plenty should thrill you. For you newbies you can expect a purely classic sound from one of the most influential, yet under rated, bands in the underground.
