Overkill
Necroshine (CMC International)

By: Jeb Branin

These long time heroes of the second wave of thrash metal are always at the top of their game and "Necroshine" is the latest brilliant chapter in their 15 plus year career. Blitz's distinctive voice seems to get more seasoned and powerful with each release. Musically the trademark OVERKILL shred is here in spades. Staccato guitar riffs, powerful yet snappy rhythms, and a furious metallic barrage of energy are expected and delivered. OVERKILL also continue their trend of recent years of incorporating dark, haunting and ugly overtones into their delivery. It is a great way to flesh out and compliment their sound and they have incorporated it well. And, of course, they have always been a band who knew the value of melody and memorable, almost catchy, riffs which they churn out a plenty on "Necroshine". The only downside to this CD is that for some reason the drums seem a bit thin. I think the intent was to make them crisp and sharp but something didn't work. They aren't so bad as to hurt the overall impact of the album they just prove a bit of a distraction at times. A long time favorite of mine, I'm pleased to hop this bandwagon any time.
