No Innocent Victim
Flesh and Blood (Victory Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Here is a band that I know for a fact are going to make waves and inflame the closed minded in the hardcore underground. Their ideals and attitudes are going to stick in the craw of many a punk and that, my friends, is something that I gotta admit I think is great. NO INNOCENT VICTIM are very forthright about their Christian beliefs and there is very little that gets under the skin of hardcore fans more than praising something that has been demonized, rightly or wrongly, in hardcore since the genres inception. I normally am a bit turned off by it myself if for no other reason that it can get pretentious and preachy but NO INNOCENT VICTIM has the class to avoid both of those pitfalls. Instead they challenge the pigeonholing of Christianity that happens in extreme music and they out and out challenge the bigotry that many have who assume that all Christians believe, think, and behave all alike. But the real appeal of this band isn't the religion, of course, but the music. They are definitely the hottest new band on Victory. They take their metal tinged hardcore and ram it straight down the throat of the listener. In fact, I daresay this is the purest Victory style sound I have heard in a long time. Astoundingly heavy and brutal and yet still raw and passionate. One of the best albums of the year frankly.
