Annex Demo Cassette 99 (Annex) By: Jeb Branin
This six track rehearsal tape was released by the band to tide their fans over until a "real" demo could be recorded. Consequently, as is almost always the case with rehearsal tapes, the sound quality here is pretty ragged. The tape will make a good reference for people who know the band but for the uninitiated, like me, it is only a hint of what is there simply because the muddy sound is hard to negotiate. ANNEX's sound is reminiscent of a heavy handed dose of hardcore influenced death with a complexity and vibe that makes me think of many of the new breed emo bands out there, although the lyrics on this tape certainly preclude emo as an accurate genre tag. Unless, of course, we want to make up a new label called "hate-emo". The music is varied and impressive in spite of the fact much of the diversity can't really drag itself out of the poor sound to really leave an impact. The potential of ANNEX is plainly evident and I am willing to bet they go down a storm live. Now if someone can convince the band to lose the homophobic crap they spew at the end of the tune "Poppy Punk" (their "allegorical" sex tune) this demo will really be worth a listen.
