Written In Ashes
Eclipse EP (Self-Released)

By: Sonya Brown

I'll admit that anything Written In Ashes releases is sure to leave me breathless. Their latest EP, "Eclipse," not only leaves me breathless, but has me gasping for more.

This 3-track CD is a special release, and is only available through the band's web-site at www.writteninashes.com. The limited editions are numbered "13 of 666", or "23 of 666". Kevyn Hay (vocals) says he has this "thing" for sacred numbers. The 3 songs, "Please", "Inauspicious", and "Corners" were engineered and mixed by their veteran sound man, Mark Blewett; and something that makes these tracks even more special is the fact that not only is their new guitarist, Nathan (Doc) Hyatt featured; but their previous guitarist, David Anderson is also heard on this cd. Kevyn informs me that Doc & David's guitar parts were recorded separately on different tracks of the master recording tape, and then the individual tracks were brought into the entire mix. This makes for an exceptionally dynamic guitar presence. Kevyn does all of the vocals on the three tracks, which were also recorded as two separate tracks and then mixed together.

I asked Kevyn if these 3 tracks will be included on their next full-length release, and he replied, "If these songs should appear on the next release, they will be different versions, and without David A. WIA has been an evolutionary process which continues to bend and twist its way around the gothic/darkwave scene. There have been changes in the lineup as well as the sound, however the entire project has been moving forward in a positive direction". He adds, "WIA hopes that with the upcoming new album that distribution and perhaps signing to an indecent label will not be far away. And again, that none of this would have been at all possible without the help, love and support of our fans, friends and families".

As I anxiously await the next Written In Ashes full length CD, Eclipse takes me back to the dark, smokey clubs of their live shows... but then it's over far too quickly. Please, may I have some more?
