Thanatos Emerging From The Netherworlds (Connected/Unveiling The Wicked) By: Jeb Branin
This is another quality "archive" release from Connected Music. This album originally saw the light of day in 1990 and was part of the original death metal explosion. In those early days death metal was still defining itself in a lot of ways and THANATOS reflects that fact. There were sort of two schools of death metal. The first was comprised of bands who had taken their cue from Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH and were completely reinventing the metal sound from that perspective. The second was a cadre of bands who were arriving at death metal through a natural evolution of taking the German thrash sound to the next level of extremeness. Their influences were much more along the lines of KREATOR, SODOM and DESTRUCTION. This album and this band are definitely part of the second school. That fact helps make this a unique CD to pick up because frankly this style of death never really took off in the same way that bands in the vein of GRAVE, UNLEASHED, ENTOMBED and MORBID ANGEL did. This style has more solos, more thrash, less growling vox and less all around brutality but fans of the aforementioned German scene will be blown away by how familiar it all sounds!
