Metal Church Live (Nuclear Blast Records) By: Jeb Branin
I gotta admit this CD took me totally by surprise. How often does a band release an official live album that was recorded 14 years previous? In my experience, almost never, but that is exactly what METAL CHURCH have done. This new CD was recorded at various dates on the band's 1986 tour in support of their then new album "The Dark". This is when the band was at the height of its popularity and sat securely amongst the second tier of thrash metal acts. They never quite achieved the level of success of the big four (METALIDETHTHRAXSLAYER) but they were on the bubble and every hardcore metal head of the time knew who they were and more than likely worshiped them. I know I did. I remember that I thought their self titled debut album was pretty good but its follow up, "The Dark", blew me away. It seemed the perfect merger of thrash and traditional metal. I ended up a huge METAL CHURCH fan. I even followed David Wayne's new band REVEREND after he left the M.C. camp. So for fans like me these old recordings are great to have. I can't decide if a new generation of fans if going to be cultivated with this album so it may end up being not much more than a novelty for old farts but you aren't going to hear me complaining!
