Spooky Pie Poisonberry (Boo) By: Geoff Melton
Reminiscent of everything from The Cramps and Gun Club to The Ventures and REM, LA's Spooky Pie continue to defy categorization with their sophomore effort Poisonberry. With an everpresent campy edge they tear through everything from garage rock, surf rock instrumentals, lo-fi punk and even goth, throwing in covers of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight", the Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" and The T-Bones' "No Matter What Shape" among the originals. While the evershifting style changes constantly keep you on your toes, they handle them all with trashy expertise. Watch for album number 3, In the Sky in the next few months.
