Impaled Nazarene/Driller Killer
Split 7" and CD (Solardisk)

By: Jeb Branin

Although scene mainstays for years, I have never actually heard IMPALED NAZARENE before. I was expecting something a bit more generic and trite. I was in no way prepared for the unbridled black thrash onslaught spewed out by this band. They have a distinctive hardcore overtone that not only lends them a gritty and harsh edge but separates their sound from the norm. These guys could fit just as easily on a bill featuring bands like KRIGSHOT, F.O.B. or UNCURBED as they could on a bill with the likes of EMPEROR, NOKTURNAL MORTUM, or even VENOM. This absolutely kicked me in the head. Their partners in crime on this record are DRILLER KILLER and everything I just said could be repeated in their description, although in the end result their black metal is a bit more classic sounding with lots of inspiration being drawn from the early 90s scene before things like keyboards and melodies made their way into the music. It is definitely noteworthy that each band does a cover of the other, a very cool way to approach a split record and one very seldom utilized.
