Sodom
Better Off Dead (SPV/Steamhammer)

By: Jeb Branin

Another SPV re-release of classic SODOM. "Better Off Dead" was originally released in 1990 and found the band trying to further develop the smoother delivery that was hinted at on the "Agent Orange" album. The problem is that the band took it just a step too far here. Although still a solid album with a couple of bona fide SODOM classics, "Better Off Dead" is one of the weaker SODOM albums. When a band has built its fanbase delivering full throttle metal with all the warts, scars and blemishes intact it is going to be hard for long time fans to accept a sanitary and unpolluted sound and such is the case here. "Better Off Dead" is still a must own for SODOManiacs (and their cover of "Cold Sweat" as a tribute to THIN LIZZY's Phil Lynott is great) but put it at the bottom of your shopping list...
