SPIV Everybody's A Rock Star Tonight (Pop Sweatshop) By: Geoff Melton
On their latest EP this Olympia WA based duo (fleshed out here by Posies frontman Ken Stringfellow, who in addition to producing contributes vocals, keyboards and bass) lays out four cuts rooted in British-flavored pop, but with a slight quirky side and tongue-in-cheek humor. Over the course of just four cuts the band manages to show extreme diversity moving from the pure, unadulterated pop of the title cut and the XTC-ish sounds of "Beatley" to the beautiful acoustic "Seedy Release" (strongly reminiscent of John Wesley Harding) and funk, hip-hip groove of "VIPs of the Street". Only flaw I can find is that four cuts just arent' enough.
