Frank Black and The Catholics Dog in the Sand (What Are Records?) By: Alex Steininger
Frank Black, the Pixies former front man, notorious for writing some of the quirkiest alt-pop songs that will ever be, has mellowed in albums since the Pixies broke up. With each album, he progressively seems to be losing his trademark lyrical punch and oddball tongue-in-cheek humor that propelled him to cult status. His latest, Dog in the Sand, is a tired folk-rock record that is not only sad, considering what Frank Black used to be, but is a cry for help. The album hints at moments of greatness, leading me, as well as the the listener to believe Frank Black still has it in him somewhere. Though, maybe this is what he needed to get out of his system before embarking back into his mind and soul and recording another revolutionary record like Surfer Rosa. I'll give this a C.
