Cruevo / Brainoil
Split CD (Boredom Noise)

By: Jeb Branin

All right!!! If BLACK SABBATH were a religion (I know it comes as a shock to many that they are not), these two bands could be alter boys! CRUEVO spew forth a mid-paced sludgecore malevolence that isn't shy about its metal influences (especially on "Razor Blades"). They build a strong groove in their music that is as infectious as it is crushing. If you can imagine what a Latino influence would do to sludge then you can imagine CRUEVO. Brilliant. Sharing the disc is my current sludge favs, BRAINOIL. Driven by the shredded vocals and ripping bass calisthenics of Greg (from Lana Dagales) this is one band that sludge fans the world over will be drooling over. Instead of the punishing plod of many of their peers BRAINOIL opt for a more driven sound... One that is both cranked and crushing. Complimenting Greg's bass is Ira who sounds like he is positively furious at his drum kit and is going to teach it a lesson by beating the hell out of it and Nate whose guitar has that thick and severe sound that gives bands like CAVITY their distinction. You might as well buy this CD now so you don't have to lie about how you "bought it when it first came out" two years from now because it is destined to be an essential ingredient to any complete sludge CD collection.
