Defeat Songs (Sessions Records)

By: Alex Steininger

I was listening to a bunch of pop-punk records this week. They seemed so watered down and weak. They were either really catchy pop songs with little to no punk or they were bad pop songs trying too hard to add some punk flair. Then I came across the Downway CD and gave it a few listens. Here is a band that plays at the speed of a train, crashing on those cymbals and bleeding the snare dry as the guitars wail and the bass slams into the music, providing for a hard hitting punk sound. Even with all of this, they still write pop-punk, adding a pinch of pop to really bring the songs to life. They're catchy, they're fast, and they make you want to move. This is punk-pop as it should be. I'll give it a B.
