The Gwens
Devil's Cliff (Happy Happy Birthday To Me)

By: Alex Steininger

The Gwens' Devil's Cliff is a lo-fi, home recorded sounding indie-rock-pop record. Using its lo-fi-ness to its advantage, the album has that relaxed, recorded in the living room feel to it. It is as if the band just sat and jammed, having some fun, while they recorded it to tape, picked the best songs, and tweaked them a bit before sending it to be mixed and mastered. The album, though loose and fun, has a composed, tight feeling to it. Maybe it is the band's ability to write undeniable pop hooks even in the lo-fi format, or it is the band's smart lyrical sense. No matter what it is, the CD is fun and easy-going, but also easy to digest. I'll give it a B.
