VARIOUS ARTISTS: If I Was Prince A Tribute To Prince (Rex Records) By: Alex Steininger
An electronic-pop tribute album to prince featuring up and coming bands like Capitol K ("Dance On"), Simian ("Under the Cherry Moon"), Hefner ("Controversy"), Bronze Age Fox ("The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"), and more, Prince has never sounded... so indie. The king of commercial soul-funk-pop is stripped down and re-built by ten artists taking their stab at being prince. And, though nobody does a good job of re-creating or imitating Prince - which, thankfully, nobody tried to do - they all sound great putting their own spin on the musical visionary that is Prince. From hushed melodies to electronically-pulsating pop, these bands do a great job of serving up Prince in a new light, so much so that if you're not already heavily acquainted with Prince, you might not even notice. The artists truly break down all walls and re-toll the songs as if they were their own. Quite a treat, I must say. Plus, it has the best packaging I've seen all year (a cleverly designed digi-pack). I'll give this an A.
