 The Jack the Ripper story had gotten stale until the Hughes Brothers applied a new spin, which I'm reluctant to describe, should it spoil anything about the film. Suffice it to say, From Hell (starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham) sheds new blood on a heretofore hackneyed topic. And most of the special features on this two-disc director's edition kick booty. They are: full-length commentary from Albert and Allen Hughes, actor Robbie Coltrane, screenwriter Rafael Yglesias and cinematographer Peter Deming; alternate ending and over 20 deleted scenes, "Jack the Ripper: 6 Degrees of Separation" interactive investigation, HBO featurette hosted by Graham, b-t-s featurette, murder site featurette, graphic novel to film comparison featurette, trailer, anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) presentation, Dolby Surround in English, French and Spanish, English subtitles.
