Longwave Tidal Wave EP (Independent) By: Cam Lindsay
Longwave are from NYC and are friends with The Strokes, however, they sound nothing like their mates. Instead, this band full of youngsters avoid the garage rock bandwagon and focus more on the gloomier side of things, aiming more towards driving, Brit-flavoured anthemic rock. Think classic Echo & The Bunnymen, think the new Coldplay album, think Radiohead circa-The Bends. Everything seems a little effortless and natural for them, with "Tidal Wave" oozing enough charm and honesty to make any Anglophile foam at the mouth. The main focus for the band is to create drama with sonics, as the guitars stand out the most, creaking and screaming feedback. If they don't become huge, it's because the public have given up on life-affirming rock, which will be quite a shame. Grade: B
