Roddy Frame
Surf (spinART Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Former Aztec Camera front man Roddy Frame's second solo album, Surf, is a bare bones, minimal album, just a man and a guitar. Frame's ability to write a meandering melody, a slippery hook, and sing along with them in with his slumbering vocal style are all in line on Surf. And though Frame's songwriting delivers astonishing melodies resulting in beautiful pop songs, his chord progressions seem to stick to a pattern, making each song sound similar after a while, which is the main hurdle of the album. He overcomes this problem with his blatant lyrics and his voice, the two main selling points here. I'll give it a B-.
