Water Hymns (Noahjohn)

By: Alex Steininger

Eerie indie-rock hymns and gospel cow-punk, Noahjohn's Water Hymns defies explanation, soaking up as much old gospel music as they do indie rock, playing to the No Depression crowd while also retaining a lot of indie rock aesthetics. Just as cow-punk spawned out of punk rockers heavily brought up on Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and their parents' old country records, Noahjohn seems eager to bring their hymns and gospel knowledge into the world of indie rock. They do so by dissecting it with pop, and reestablish the two as something unique, something their own. Think alt-country with an old-time feel. I'll give it a B.
