Ikara Colt Basic Instruction EP (Fantastic Plastic) By: Cam Lindsay
Recent Epitaph Records signees Ikara Colt are a London-based band that are not the typical Epitaph punk. Their brand of art-school drop out punk is really tight and packs a real wallop, making it just the ticket for those digging the current nu-rock revolution. Combining the witty lyrical styling and diverse song structures of The Fall, with a burst of fierce energy adjacent to The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Basic Instruction, an EP structured around the "Maybe 1 Day" single, is a nice companion to this year's Chat & Business album. An alternate version of the single, titled, "Maybe 1 Day [Version]" has even more in common with the more minimal work of Joy Division than the original, which is also here. The exclusive tracks are the real treat though, exploring the different sides to the band, such as the Sonic Youth-spazzing "Panic" and the fist pumpin' anthem "Don't They Know". They might dress like nice young folks, but behind the ties and jackets is a four-piece looking to knock your block off with their sound. A-
