Overkill
Wrecking Everything - An Evening in Asbury Park [DVD - 2 disc set] (Spitfire Records)

By: Jeb Branin

This is one band that has killed me, over and over again (all puns, lame as they may be, intended). Only a small handful of metal bands have stayed true to their original sound (and fanbase) for as long as OVERKILL. As they close in on 20 years now, they play the same enraged and violent brand of thrash metal now that they did in the mid-80s when they were one of the pioneering major label thrash bands. That doesn't mean they have stagnated. Not at all. In fact, if anything they are more intense and driving now than they have ever been. Any doubts? Buy this double disc DVD. Disc one is a blistering, multi-camera show recorded live in New Jersey. It's a thing of beauty. Pure metal, delivered with all the power and passion of the genre and almost none of the pomp and pretension that has always polluted the scene. Disc two is an OVERKILL history lesson, of sorts, with Blitz and D.D. telling all their best stories, including the "locked in a Polish prison" story. Whatever you have to pay for this DVD, it's worth twice that.
