Joss Mills Love Is True (Plaza Recordings) By: Cam Lindsay
You wouldn't know it it you didn't check the liner notes, but Joss Mills is not alone on Love Is True. Accompanied by Tim Wheeler and Rick McMurray of Ash on a handful of tracks, Mills has created a record that is strong in its Pastelisms. Love Is True is straight up, moaner pop, hiding melody behind unenthusiasm, a fashion made famous by the lovely Stephen Pastel. There are many shining moments, even though they might not have a lot of sunshine behind them. Most notable is the Spanish flavor of "Someone's On My Mind", which bounces around in that Latin style that Belle & Sebastian has been known to roam around in. "As You Can Be", a desperate plea to a lover, sees Mills in his most vulnerable, yet instead of coming across as something pathetic, it makes him true and likeable. A worthy debut album.
