Home Runs (Sound Asleep Records)

By: Gary "Pig" Gold

Christer and Jerker of Sweden's exemplary Sound Asleep Records have gone and done it again: that is, lovingly, flawlessly assembled one ideal li'l compilation disc. Only the theme this time out, rather than a collection of the world's coolest in rooty underground sounds, is one historic overview of North America's finest indie-pop from the long-lost late '70s!

Yes, that (final?) carefree D.I.Y.-era when anyone with a copy of the first Who album and four or five hundred extra bucks could, and more than often not actually would, press up a few hundred vinyl 45s to sell at gigs or from the back pages of Bomp! Magazine. For you see, for every Plimsouls, Blondie, 20/20 and Ramones who broke through to even fleeting commercial success back then, there lay dozens upon dozens of just-as-competent combos reverently paying tribute to "Please Please Me" and "Go All The Way" out in their very own musical backwoods.

Well, Home Runs collects a full twenty-one such nuggets in what I, for one, hope will be but the inaugural volume in a pure pop Pebbles series from the label in Sweden which continues to do what YOUR favorite label should!
