Hot Hot Heat Make Up The Breakdown (Warner Bros. Records) By: Alex Steininger
Recently signing to Warner Bros. Records, Hot Hot Heat ride the new wave and retro rock coattails. Make Up The Breakdown, their Sub Pop full-length, is an nauseating look at what happens when three good looking guys create hipster music, catch the right wave, and land a big record deal. It pretends to be threatening, but is as safe as a house mouse, and as spontaneous as a soccer mom. Yet, kids who thought The Strokes were the most original band to hit the airwaves in years will love this record. Everyone else will see right through its influences and clamor for something else. The album's only saving grace is that it has a few catchy moments, like the chorus to "Bandages", the album's first single. I'll give it a C.
