The Microphones
Mount Eerie (K Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Mount Eerie is an epic tale of life and death. The final album by The Microphones, mastermind Phil Elvrum, a member of K Records' D+ and Old Time Relijun, uses dark humor and lo-fi subtleties to bring to life a long-playing, 5-track concept album. Taking you on an unforgettable journey through both your questions and fears, Mount Eerie will have you laughing nervously and mourning the loss of something you never knew. From its airy, almost ghost like presence to its harrowing guest vocalists (including Calvin Johnson as the voice of the "Universe"), Elvrum's acoustic-based songs and light, subtle instrumentation fillings, Mount Eerie is both a nightmare and a dream. I'll give it an A-.
