Dead To Fall
Everything I Touch Falls to Pieces (Victory Records)

By: Jeb Branin

As the lines between hardcore and metal continue to blur we are rewarded with bands like DEAD TO FALL who are a hardcore band playing death metal. The merger is a good one. They have the abandon and aggression of good hardcore and also have the musicianship and gravity-well denseness of superior death metal. There is an obvious Scandinavian death influence here as DEAD TO FALL rip through tunes that are both melodic and crushing at the same time. Their complexity, virtuosity, and relentless grinding also hail the Florida death sound on the mid-90s. The lyrics may be the most interesting element in the bands amalgamation of styles. They focus on loss, love, heartbreak and emotional suffering. Not in an emo kind of way, but more in a melancholy neo-gothic mode. They are very simple and minimalist, yet are remarkably poetic and expressive. On the strength of this one CD alone, DEAD TO FALL have become one of my favorite bands on the Victory roster.
