JFA
We Know We Suck (Alternative Tentacles)

By: Jeb Branin

I was never much of a skate punk fan and I've been decidedly under-enthused by the Alternative Tentacles skate re-issue series... until now. JFA were, are and forever will be, something different. Something special. In oh-so-many ways their sound remains a touchstone of my passion for early 80s punk rock. Not that I was ever a huge JFA fan, it is rather that they are just one of those prototypical bands. They sounded like everybody and nobody all at the same time. They had the youthful and snotty aggression that was the brand identifier at the time. Best of all, they've aged well. This CD, which compiles the "Blatant Localism" EP (Placebo 1981), the "Valley of the Yakes" LP (Placebo 1983) and a bunch of other bonus tracks, is without question the only definitive entry in the AT surf-punk re-issue series (so far).
