Lana Dagales/Iron Lung Split LP (Boredom Noise/Cryptological Research) By: Jeb Branin
This record was about two years in the making and was worth every hour of the wait. Both bands are two-man outfits, both were slated to release LPs on Slap A Ham before it went under, and both are amongst my current favorite bands. What more could you ask for? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. LANA DAGALES are a bass-driven unit whose music is blazing and chaotic yet somehow never spins completely out of control. These tracks are more ferocious than those on their debut 7" (as hard as it is to believe that such a thing is possible). This band is, I hope, the prototype for thrash in the years to come. On the flip side is IRON LUNG, the current premier band out of Reno, which is a far greater compliment that you might think! IL is a guitar driven band and in spite of having released some of the absolute best available EPs over the last 2+ years, this is better than anything they've ever done. IL's music is distinctive and quirky enough that it is really no surprise at all that they continue to get better and better with each release because they continue to fine tune their approach. Musically this is as monstrous and embittered as you could ask for. Both LD and IL have full length records in the works and I'm like a kid at Christmas in anticipation!
