 On his eighth full-length, Chris Whitley's Hotel Vast Horizon finds the all-over-the-map singer-songwriter going back to his roots, delivering a deep, wistful acoustic-based singer-songwriter record steeped in folk-rock and Americana, with a slight blues feel to it at times. Though, his pop sensibilities, and even his rock appetite, come in to play, to a much lesser degree, but still earning a place in the songs and helping to propel them. Dark, moody, and rich, Whitley's Hotel Vast Horizon is splendid, easy-going, laid-back record that grows and grows on you. I'll give it an A-.
