The Styrenes
It's Still Artastic (ROIR USA)

By: Alex Steininger

Featuring members of Pere Ubu, Electric Eels, Lounge Lizards, Mirrors, Pagans, and Golden Palominos, The Styrenes deliver 27 tracks of proto-punk/avant-rock on It's Still Artastic, a re-issue that also includes 10 previously unreleased tracks. Sounding lo-fi and gritty, the recording's fidelity acts as an instrument, adding to the glam-influenced, acid-drenched songwriting of the album. Lasting nearly seventy-four minutes, the band jumps and leaps around, one minute playing to a psychedelic crowd and the next a punk rock audience. Though it is a hodgepodge, these changes and shifts work in the album's favor, keeping it fresh and new sounding, despite the dated-ness of everything. I'll give it a B-.
