David Singer and the Sweet Science Civil Wars (Deep Elm Records) By: Alex Steininger
Chicago-based singer-songwriter David Singer, backed by The Sweet Science, moves past his debut, 2000's The Cost of Living, where he played the majority of instruments, and offers up a disc that leaves room for collaboration. The result, Civil Wars is a melodic, pop-surfaced singer-songwriter album that sparkles and gleams with plenty of smart hooks, solid lyrics, and clean, distinct vocals. The backing band plays with just enough oomph to keep the band present. But they don't step on Singer's toes or over run their boundary, leaving room for Singer to roam and expel his thoughts, all while crafting a sweetly rich album that will help earn him plenty of indie fan fare. A breath of refreshing air from the normally all-emo label, Deep Elm Records. I'll give this a B.
