Dead Meadow Shivering King and Others (Matador Records) By: Alex Steininger
Their forth full-length, Shivering King and Others, and first for Matador, finds Dead Meadow's 70's arena rock and 60's drenched psychedelic blend ever further down the spiral. It is a swirling mesh of drug-induced, acid-lovin' psychedelic melodies that make you want to scream "my hands are melting", while staying true to the hard rock formula they love. However, they forgo being blatant about the hard rock, making it ever so subtle, instead choosing to explore pretty, space-y, and even groove-oriented vibes all within the psychedelic realm. If you're one for dozy, cozy psychedelic rock, this is your ticket, over an hour of sounds that will take you on a magic carpet ride. From the lethargic journey of Jason Smith's high-pitched croon through the sounds that make you want to sink into their pillow-y textures, here is a record to get lost in. I'll give it a B.
