Monstrosity
Rise to Power (Conquest Music)

By: Jeb Branin

MONSTROSITY has maintained its consistency like few other bands from the early days of death metal. As pioneers in the first wave Florida death scene, it is almost hard to believe that the latest CD "Rise to Power" finds MONSTROSITY as intense and mind-numbing in 2003 as they were in 1990. While almost all their peers from the early 90s have either broken up, or wavered from true death metal mayhem, it is great to hear a band that still has all their chops and respects their earliest fans as much as their new ones. "Rise to Power" combines the band's trademark technical virtuosity with a bleak and violent worldview that is as harsh as their delivery. It was bands like this that first prompted zine hacks to use the term "brutal" when referring to death metal* for once it is nice to see the word as applicable despite its overuse. MONSTROSITY truly are brutal in every sense of the word.
