Lostprophets Start Something (Columbia) By: Alex Steininger
Glossy, well-produced modern rock with a hankering for metal, Lostprophets' Start Something delivers a heart-on-the-sleeve emotional tug alongside its bone-crushing nu-metal attack. This is the type of radio-friendly band that dominates the airwaves, pouring ample melody into their harsh sound, crashing out a fierce, sing-along sound that has all the characteristics of a band to dominate the radio. But, despite its generic, easily palatable hard edges, Lostprophets somehow come out ahead of their contemporaries, delivering a record that is memorable, even if you don't want it to be. Its force too powerful, its hooks too sharp and shiny, and the sugar-coated sheen just so easy to swallow; It's a tight rope walk every time this disc spins. Still, it's got the aggression, the melody, and the charm to maintain a healthy stay on radio, and enough chops to call it a career if they persist and work hard enough. I'll give it a C.
