Catty Witch / Deadline
Split CD (Sound Pollution)

By: Jeb Branin

It wasn't until I put this CD on that I realized it was a split release and not an album titled Deadline by CATTY WITCH. Not the first time I've made that mistake with a split release. Anyway, this twelve track effort (five songs from each band and one video from each) is definitely worth picking up, even if you have to use that money your aunt sent you for your birthday. CATTY WITCH is from Osaka and they play a direct and raw brand of punk that is both infectious and biting. I bet live this band attracts a loyal following that stand on the front row and raucously screams along with every word. If not, they will. Superb is an adjective that jumps to mind. DEADLINE are from London and play a more melodic brand of street punk, but that doesn't mean it is any less enjoyable. In fact, for me this really harkens back to that late 70s/early 80s punk sound that was encapsulated on comps like the Punk and Disorderly series. It is worth noting that "harkens back" does not mean this sounds dated. In fact, they take those undeniably strong influences and infuse them with the precision and skill that is far more a trademark of street punk Y2K and beyond. Although it shouldn't matter, to some it does so I'll mention that between these two bands there are twelve X chromosomes and six Y chromosomes.
