Milton Mapes Westernaire (Aspyr) By: Alex Steininger
Milton Mapes'Westernaire is singer-songwriter fare gone right, a record from a songwriter that knows how to work with the basics and still deliver a rich, warm, melodic record that avoids the singer-songwriter pitfalls and succeeds with a strong sense of both pop and rock. Some may call Westernaire an indie-rock and/or a pop-rock record, however, Westernaire is more than that, it is a limitless delivery of hooks, intimacy, momentum, and introspective thoughts. Layers are added, layers are peeled away, as each song rolls by, from stripped down to full-on compositions that get Mapes' message across, always with a rustic, melodic sensibility that leaves an unforgettable tune or, at the very least, phrase stuck in your head. I'll give it a B.
