The Best of X: Make The Music Go Bang! (Rhino Records)

By: Alex Steininger

On yet another "best of" record, Los Angeles' famed, influential punk act X is immortalized with Make The Music Go Bang! The Best of X, on Rhino Records. Including all the favorites -- "Los Angeles", "White Girls", "Johny Hit and Run Paulene", "Under the Big Black Sun", "Blue Spark", "Your Phone's off the Hook, But You're Not", "Adult Books" (single version), and "We're Desperate" (single version) -- this 2-disc, 46-track disc even floats over into The Knitters' territory with "The Call of the Wreckin' Ball" and "Someone Like You". Also including a few live cuts ("Skin Deep Town", "Around My Heart", "Just Another Perfect Day", and "Devil Doll"), this collection offers up plenty for the X novice and expert alike. But, the true treat is the 28-page booklet including liner notes from notable musicians, producers, and scenesters at the time of X's domination of the punk scene. The music has already proven itself time and time again, and still sounds great here; there is no question to the power or validity of the band. And while it may seem pointless for another "best of" record, if any band deserves this, X is a rightful candidate. I'll give it an A.
