Callenish Circle
Forbidden Empathy 2xCD (Candlelight Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Before signing to Metal Blade Records and before appearances at Wacken, Summer Breeze and Ozzfest; CALLENISH CIRCLE had a couple of albums, a mini-CD and a demo out. None of them were readily available in the Americas. Candlelight Records has taken steps to rectify that unfortunate reality. Forbidden Empathy is a two-disc collection of the entire early CALLENISH CIRCLE catalog. Twenty-nine tunes that show CALLENISH CIRCLE are not only a band that is currently deserving of a place amongst the melodic death elite, but they are a band that has always stood amongst the best of the genre. Many times these "early recordings" re-releases are only for hardcore fans, but not this time. This is an album is worth every penny. Any fan of bitter death metal tempered with sophisticated melodies and notable song writing will enjoy this. The music manages to be harsh and mesmerizing at the same time. Many bands attempt to forge an amalgamation like this, but few succeed with this level of aplomb. Good stuff.
