Usurper
Cryptobeast (Earache)

By: Jeb Branin

This brace of CDs by USURPER is proof positive that the neo-death thrash explosion isn't going away anytime soon. Both these albums host a hellishly fierce display of the might of hate-driven metal. Borrowing the flavor and vibe of early minions of darkness like VENOM and CELTIC FROST, the band ups the ante considerably with a cyclonic sound that borrows from both the finest death metal and the harshest satanic thrash. Leather and spike clad headbangers the world over are undoubtedly hailing USURPER as kings (or maybe demigods) of "pure metal". This is harsh enough to polish a granite mountain, but at the same time, pounding enough to reduce that same granite to gravel. Cryptobeast is the later of the two albums and is the better of the two as well. It's heavier and more hammering thanks in no small part to new vocalist Dan Lawson.
