Chris Robley This Is The (Self-Released) By: Alex Steininger
On his debut solo album, This is The, Portland, Oregon singer-songwriter Chris Robley delivers a slightly ambient, dark pop-driven album of experimentation and conventional pop-rock, ensuring that this ten track collection of songs are both lyrically ripe for those that want to latch on to lyrics. But, also, the album is left-of-the-dial enough to entice indie-rock fans over into the singer-songwriter world of Chris Robley. From the opening track of "Little Miss Masochist", a ragged folk-pop song. To the eerie spoken word of "Mantra of Melting America", through the danceable "Wondrous Withering of Days", Robley shakes things up so you never know what to expect, while keeping things tied together enough to make a cohesive album in a bed of experimentation. At its core it's pop-rock, though, so don't forget that. I'll give it a B.
