The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up Picks Us Apart (Absolutely Kosher) By: Alex Steininger
The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up seems to keep getting better with each record. Their latest, Picks Us Apart is a mature pop record with both musical and lyrical depth. The band can play a slow, brooding song ("Hall Clock"), low-key indie rock ("Black & Gold"), and moody pop-rock ("A Toast To The Happy Couple"), all without losing the cohesiveness that Picks Us Apart thrives on. The band is dark as they are melodic, making for an interesting contradiction that seems to be the fuel for these blurry-eyed pop songs. I'll give it an A.
