The Small Change
The Small Change (Unmashable Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Wearing their Elvis Costello influences on their sleeves, Seattle's The Small Change don't care on their debut, self-titled full-length, a rock-infused power-pop collection that is more grit than polish, which works well for these blue collar pop songs. If power-pop needed a kick in the ass, The Small Change has done it. Though, I wouldn't call this power-pop, even though they love their pop music. Rather, this is the rare rock band that knows how to walk the line between power-pop and garage-rock, making something that holds true to both, but, in the end, adheres to its rock forces. Yes, this band has made a solid debut - and you get the feeling they're ten times better live. I'll give it a B.
